Slate Plant Labels

I've just rescued a load of broken slates from a client's house that is being re-roofed and MrPP reckons he can cut/break them into strips to make labels. None of the pens or pencils I have work on them (or at least is visible!) and chalk won't survive long (they are labels for permanent plants) so I wondered what else I could use?
Happy Easter!

Yes, I thought about paint that I could then write on, but thought it doesn't sound so pretty!! And I'm not skilled enough to write with a paintbrush!

How about a permanent white marker pen? Ebay and Amazon do several sorts.

I think that's the same as I was going to suggest, a grease pencil.

Nail varnish has a little brush in it - I think?
Only used the stuff to stop ladders in tights, back in the bad old days when i had to work for a living.

Thanks everyone Smile
The chinagraph doesn't work very well because the surface is too rough, sadly.
Tippex or nail varnish maybe a goer, or failing that I'll have to look at buying a permanent marker, although I'm trying to avoid buying!!
