Eternal tomatoes

I could have titled this Hanging tomatoes or Winter Storage tomatoes but "Eternal" sound so much more interesting. Smile

Franchi/Seeds of Italy suggest that Principe Borghese tomato plants can be pulled up at the end of the season, hung upside down and the toms can be used over winter.

I've read about other toms that can be treated in the same way and they seem to be mostly Italian varieties (names forgotten at the moment).

Has anyone tried this technique and did it work?

I’ve tried hanging them upside down in the past to encourage ripening at the end of the season. Never tried it for keeping them stored on the plant overwinter.

Didn’t notice any real improvement in ripening end of season toms either, so not done it again!

Just checked my journal and I grew Principe Borghese in 2016 huge plants that took over the GH so I didn't grow them again.

Could you go back to 2016 and try hanging a couple of plants, please, Bren.? Smile

The first allotment plot I ever got at about Christmas time had ripe tomatoes growing in the greenhouse at that time. Last plot holder had just walked away and left them. I remember being surprised they were there, and still quite edible. Smile
