Thanks veggie, I thought it would be a fools errand but thought I'd ask. I may do some experimenting.

Nothing leaps out at me except, maybe, clover which you mentioned. Maybe one to look at again?

Looks like sowseeds.co.uk are selling clovers in big quantities as a green manure so might look at a mix n see what happens.
