RE: The Shire..... - Broadway - 27-11-2020

Planted out the Taunton Deane (4) and Nine Star Broccoli (2) today. Mulched with cardboard then leaves and popped pots on for today, will net tomorrow. (They were in my yard during the summer and the pigeons stripped them bare!)

Hoping I don’t have to do much more next year except harvest, who knows!

Is anyone else growing these?

Decided to protect the young asparagus plants after seeing some disturbance in the bed (1 bottle short!)

Also took a few photos of the plot "crap zone" before having a hack!!

You can see in the 3rd photo where the fence has started collapsing!

Dug up the chard plants today as I need to reclaim the area. Potted them on, hopefully they will give me something next year?

Picked the rest of my parsnips today, as I said this was an experimental year. Overall well happy but I need to prepare the area for next year now.

Not a lot done at the plot the last couple of days due to the weather, managed to clear most of the "crap zone" so it’s looking a bit better now.

I'm thinking of moving the compost daleks a bit nearer to the back / left, will give me the opportunity to turn them. Also if we do get to London for Christmas in intend to bring my compost tumbler back with me, if it fits in the car!!

Finished tidying the "crap zone" today, covered with a strip of weed membrane, not bothering going right to the fence.

Will move the compost bins to the left after Christmas.

Tidied and covered blowaway shelving in the yard. They are currently home to 25 strawberry runners, 21 wild garlic bulbs, 21 walky leeks, 6 walking onions, 11/12 broad beans(Statissa & Witkiem), and some odds & sods.

All destined for the plot new yearSmile

Positioned, levelled(ish), and layered the last of the planned pallets collars at the plot. Layered with tree clippings, cardboard, grass, leafs, and whatever else apart from manure as it's planned for parsnips?

I now have the 16 pallet collars I'd planned for this year in place acting as small RB's.

My high level plan for this year is as follows....Please note this is what I'm calling my first "proper" year with a plot so any observations, advice, glaring errors please feel free to point outSmileSmile

RB1/2 - Strawberries
RB3/4 - Potatoes followed by Kohlrabi & Paq Choi
RB5/6 - Onions followed by ??
RB7/8 - Broad beans followed by Chard & Spinach
RB9 - DFB's
RB10 - Garlic plus my mixture of walky leeks/onions
RB11 - Comfrey
RB12 - Beets
RB13 - Parsnips
RB14 - Annual Leeks
RB15 - Wild Garlic
RB16 - Carrots?

In addition I have what I've called 3 large perennial beds...
LB1 - Asparagus (1 year old plants grown from seed)
LB2 - Currently has leeks, I then plan to have Rhubarb (4 plants currently in pots) and Babington Leeks?
LB3 - 4 x Taunton Deane and 2 x Nine Star Broccoli

Most of the salad crops will be grown in the back yard at home.

Climbing beans will be grown up and around the greenhouse frame, trench was dug and filled about a month ago.

Cucurbits also have a dedicated area to roam.

I intend to plant a row of JA's and Raspberries straight across the plot.

The rest of my fruit is currently in pots in the yard (3 blueberries, 1 blackthorn, 1 gooseberry, 1 tayberry)

Lastly, I need a larger area for brassicas, I have a plastic greenhouse frame and 8 more pallet collars to use, maybe some cage type construction? (Again suggestions most welcome)Smile
