Semi-determinate tomatoes - JJB - 30-06-2024 I've got 3 Orangeto toms in fairly big pots [attachment=7677] [attachment=7676] [attachment=7675] They're designated semi-determinate and benefits from slight support. So I plonked them in the big pots with a bit of support and left them alone. As you can see they've sprawled well and are contuing to do so. I think I'll have to put a central cane with a wigwam of string to support the outlying branches. The question is what should I have done with a semi-determinate plant by way of pruning. The Web is rather confusing. RE: Semi-determinate tomatoes - Veggie - 30-06-2024 Mark Pelican (remember him from the dark side?) says:- Semi-Determinate: Allow all the sideshoots on the main vine to grow (secondary vines) but remove all sideshoots on the secondary vines. Each vine will set a small number of trusses (two or three) and , like Indeterminate cultivars, the fruit will ripen gradually over the season and will have to be removed before the first frost kills the plant. https://myvegpatch.co.uk/tomatoes-determinate-indeterminate-semi-determinate-cordon-or-bush-pruning-harvesting/ Have fun with that!! Great looking plants though. Maybe it's a bit too late for those instructions but I might have a go at thinning them out. Should've asked earlier. PS thanks for the link. RE: Semi-determinate tomatoes - JJB - 01-07-2024 Before [attachment=7681] After [attachment=7680] All three have been pruned and fitted with the equivalent of an M&S full support bra and as a mature, rather buxom, woman I can attest to the feeling of security adequate support affords. RE: Semi-determinate tomatoes - Small chilli - 01-07-2024 They’re looking good RE: Semi-determinate tomatoes - JJB - 01-07-2024 (01-07-2024, 03:47 PM)Small chilli Wrote: They’re looking goodP thinks so too RE: Semi-determinate tomatoes - JJB - 01-07-2024 If these Orangeto toms are as nice as the seed companies say, I will grow them again and hopefully remember to prune and support them properly. RE: Semi-determinate tomatoes - toomanytommytoes - 01-07-2024 I'm not pruning my Orangeto, it can sprawl as much as it wants. Nowadays I grow all of my bush tomatoes on top of a table, so they can sprawl wherever without touching the ground. Great looking plants!
