Alstroemeria - Vinny - 02-02-2022 Just wondered if anyone has had much joy in growing these from seed? They are very expensive to buy as plants and last year I tried them from seed. From memory they took ages to germinate and I think from a full packet of seed I got one plant which died off because I forgot to water it. ![]() What is the secret, does anyone know? ![]() RE: Alstroemeria - Small chilli - 02-02-2022 I’m trying at the moment. No sign of life from the seeds as yet. Sown New Year’s Day. I don’t know if they need heat , patients or anything else. As ever I’m making it up. Seeds collected from a local garden. So I have no information on when or how. Obviously I could & should google, but I haven’t. RE: Alstroemeria - MartinH - 02-02-2022 In a previous garden, I grew a patch of Ligtu Hybrid Alstromerias. It was a while ago, but I remember sowing in a tray and putting in the fridge for a bit. I think I will try seeds again as the plants are far too expensive! ![]() RE: Alstroemeria - Admin - 03-02-2022 Temperature: It is recommended to place the seeds in dampened peat moss, seal in a ziploc bag and place the seeds in the refrigerator for 3 weeks. After the cold treatment, grow Peruvian Lily seed in 3 inch pots, 3 - 4 seeds in each pot and lightly cover them with soil. Place pots in 70F for germination. RE: Alstroemeria - Vinny - 24-05-2025 These are one of my favourite cut flowers and I have given up on growing them from seed! They do have plants at £9.99 each in Lidl though so I may splash out and get a couple. I found this interesting site on you tube which is quite informative about growing them. https://youtu.be/TnCZshqDCzA RE: Alstroemeria - SarrissUK - 24-05-2025 I love them too Vinny, and they are amazing as a cut flower, outlasting every other flower! Good luck with it! ![]() RE: Alstroemeria - Vinny - 26-05-2025 I did splash out and bought a large potted pink Alstromeria and a purple one (the only two colours they had) It was very windy yesterday, as it is today, so after taking off the wrapping paper I put them into my greenhouse at the allotment. They are in 8 inch pots and were desperate for water so I gave them a good soak. My greenhouse is a bit 'tumbledown' with panes of glass missing so I placed them on the bench under a broken pane. That way if it rains they will get watered but are a bit sheltred from the wind. Long term I am not sure how I will grow them? Possibly in large pots either indoors or outdoors or even planted outdoors at home or allotment? I need to knock them out of their pots to check the root system and see if they need re-potting soon, or whether they are ok for the time being? |
