I didn't realise that it was "a whimsy to grow things like hops"!
I'm growing one for the community beer - lots of locals grow one or two hop plants and the hops are collected for a local microbrewery who turn them into beer that is sold back to the community at a low price.
PS I haven't watched the TV programme so have no idea what they do with hops.
......................and, as Greenleaves knows, You don't get owt for nowt.

I'll give the programme a miss. There's something about A.T. that just gets me annoyed whenever he opens his mouth. I suppose I could watch it muted with subtitles on but for now I'll just pass.

Having seen several references to Beechgrove garden and J. McC. having watched it since it started, there have been a number of presenters with Jim McC coming over as possibly better than most but the program has always been "down to earth" pun intended, there is very little of the exotic gardening and planting of very expensive plants it features gardening at affordable prices and still has good presenters and yes I have a favourite who is Chris Beardshaw a presenter with an easy way and a lot of knowledge

I know you've already been told Neffa - but I picked up a hops plant from Lidl or Aldi a couple of years ago for a few quid.
I don't do home brew now.
Can't bring myself to dig it out.
Even when I did home brew I never used the hops
Hadn't thought of myself as a whimsical type before...

Curly, I think beechgrove ticks all the boxes for a home grower it is focussed more on Scottish seasons which I appreciate are shorter. I love that they experiment and are happy to show their failures, and it is generally budget orientated. JmcC is like Murray Walker for me, his voice was perfect for the show. I wish they did the same for Wales and Terry Walton, a proper down to earth gardener with knowledge to spare.
