Either way it looked less than attractive when wet. I'm quite partial to a knitted waistcoat, as part of a three-piece suit I'm sure they will be back in fashion soon. Fairisle is a bit tight for me, I prefer an open Arran knit, there's more room for a chocolate biscuit to go with the cocoa.
