Last year when I dug up my elephant garlic I saved the bulbils and planted them on the surface in a large pot. They are still on the surface now and haven't put out any roots. I even took a few and took off the hard outer coating to se if that would help.............but it didn't!(24-06-2022, 03:11 PM)Veggie Wrote: I leave my elephant garlic to flower, then dig it up. As I said, I leave the little bulblets in the ground, keep the big ones to use or plant, and plant them when the mood takes me - usually late autumn. The large ones store well, don't see why the small ones wouldn't too. Thanks, I have 10 so will store and plant in big pots the first year, apparently they do not divide until the 2nd year? RE: Garlic 2021-22 - Veggie - 25-06-2022 Watch the video I posted, Danny! One of the cloves doesn't seem to have divided, need to double check. Plan for next time will be the corms in 2-3 pots, and one divided bulb and the whole bulb/clove replanted, saving the last bulb for eating, well thats the plan RE: Garlic 2021-22 - Vinny - 25-06-2022 (25-06-2022, 11:02 AM)Veggie Wrote: Watch the video I posted, Danny! The problem is when I harvest my elephant garlic all the small corms come with it ? Apart from that I don't particularily want volunteer garlic growing through the next crop, whatever that may be? Have you actually tried planting any of the small corms Veggie, and with any success? RE: Garlic 2021-22 - Veggie - 25-06-2022 I just knock them off and bury them as I have a permanent Elephant garlic patch. I'm sure they grow as the patch is becoming denser. RE: Garlic 2021-22 - Mark_Riga - 25-06-2022 My ordinary garlic is about right for harvesting now. I'm going to use egg boxes to save the bulbs for planting this autumn with 2 bulbs from each type in each egg. Then I'll plant out one and monitor the other for when it starts to sprout to find out which keeps best of the varieties I have. I've just dug up one variety so far with 7 bulbs for the kitchen. RE: Garlic 2021-22 - Vinny - 27-06-2022 Tried doing this with the elephant garlic bulbils but I must admit I don't think it helped much? https://youtu.be/uARXKVxp6jQ RE: Garlic 2021-22 - Veggie - 27-06-2022 What a lot of faff!! I'd probably cut my finger trying to do it too.! |
