Morning all. Smile
In my part of the world its looking sunny with some cloud - not forecast to be as high as yours, Boss. Watch you don't melt!!

It's supposed to get to 28here but will no doubt be hotter in the sun. So I will be inside till this evening.

Proserpina, it may be that your flat mates feel the same? Maybe get together and give the whole place a good scrub. If you can all go over the kitchen together it will enable you to use it.
Can you paint? I lick of emulsion in your room wood make it feel fresher...and then I would go for all Mikeys suggestions.
I would choose some salad leaves to grow, even cress ( I love that in a sandwich) maybe a pot of radish? What is the kitchen window like? Could you use that?

#both my sons live in student digs - they are never very nice but they always Chuck some white paint on the walls - and the DIY people are always allowed access. That may be in written in your contract.

Morning all. Not going to be as hot as yesterday I hope. I gave up yesterday and retreated indoors to the aircon. A bit of cloud cover today which makes it more pleasant. I must get on with some weeding, if outdoors, if indoors maybe some preserving.

RE: Good Morning, Afternoon, Evening, Night! - Proserpina - 08-08-2020

Hello all. I'm back in Grimsby this weekend, supposedly packing, but haven't been very productive so far. I got back after midnight last night and it's a bit warm for anything vigorous (Alexa insists it is only 19 degrees here, but it feels a lot hotter than that). I've just been out and done some tidying in the garden, but had to retreat indoors again with the job only part done.

I'm being moved into a different flat at the accommodation (just offered it when I went to sign my tenancy agreement, I hadn't complained), but haven't seen it yet. It's on the first floor which is much better from a security/personal safety point of view and I've been told it's a bigger room and "nice and light". I think it would be very bad luck to get another blocked sink, so that will be better. It also gets me away from the singing flatmate (who also talks constantly to herself, and set off the fire alarm for the whole building Thursday night), though that might be out of the frying pan and into the fire if the new flatmates are worse! I've been researching mobile broadband and it looks like my mobile network has a big poor signal area right where my hospital is. I think a mobile broadband connector on another network will allow me to stream/download like normal - it will be very expensive (£35/month), but will definitely be worth it if it works! I've also been told it should be fine to have a kettle in my room, so will probably try and get a small quiet travel kettle.

I'm hoping to go back with some bedding of my own, a toothbrush holder, some cleaning things, a cup (I took a bowl to make my cold-soak couscous in, but didn't think to take anything to drink out of!), some Command hooks and a few other things. I'll also look out for anything that might be useful while I'm packing, and can keep those things to one side.

I've spent eight years in total as a student (across two degrees), and spent large portions of my time as a medical student staying in hospital accommodation but can only think of one as bad as this. However, I'm really trying to be positive - at least I have a job, no financial worries, and a roof over my head! Thank you to all of you for your suggestions and commiserations. Sadly I can't paint the room, but I will ask if I can put my own curtains up as they, and my own bedding, will immediately make the place look nicer. I do think cress and sprouting seeds will be a good option for growing as they don't really need much light at all (and I have jars for sprouting seeds already). I haven't done well with orchids before, but might be more focused in tending to one when I don't also have fifty containers outdoors to look after!

Evening AllSmile
Its so noisy here I can hardy here myself speak - to the plants.Smile
Rolling thunder, sheet lightning and the patter of tiny raindrops. Quite spectacular but I'm glad I do have to go out in it.
Stays safe everyone - seems to be a lot of it about at the moment!

I saw your lighting but couldn’t hear the thunder, the sky was on fire all around us but not a sound it was very eerie to watch.

Morning All

At last we had rain and plenty of it! Lots of thunder and lightning to boot. Lasted about 2 hours and knocked the power out. The temp dropped from 34° to 23° in less than 30 minutes.

Still incredibly muggy though

Morning all!
Phew, the heatwave has passed and although we had huge amounts of lightening and thunder all round not a drop of rain. Just up the road it flooded... For the first time the heat has started to effect established plants - my young walnut looks a bit ropey with dying crispy leaves and I notice the big mature one over the road has lost most of its leaves. With a week above 35 and three days of 40+ it isn't suprising. Or sustainable - what are we all going to do?
In the next valley the farmers are no longer able to abstract water for irrigation of their crops, meanwhile my neighbour has just started excavations for his holiday home swimming pool. No words.
Rant over Smile

Off to do some topiary, not something I thought I'd be saying ten years ago Big Grin and collect some cosmos seeds.

Best wishes to you all.

Afternoon up to yet we've had no rain and only seen lightening in the distance we could do with a good downpour the last time it rained here it dried as soon as it hit the ground so everywhere is so dry especially in the fields.
