I've cut up plastic milk bottle and used the flat bits to write on with marker pen.
I've cheated and bought lots of bamboo markers (including some big ones) from Wilko and B&M. I can probably write on them in marker pen and then sand them down for next year, or add them to my compost if they don't weather well.
Yesterday - 6 rows of Onion Sets
Today - 2 Globe Artichokes and 2 rows of Broad Beans

As well as plastic ones I like the lolly sticks from Magnum ices (others makes are available  Wink). As well as liking lolly choc ices, I have a pal whose husband has one every day so a supply is guaranteed. They're not much use outside as they get discoloured by the soil and lose their writing, but they're great for giveaway plants, so I can keep the big plastic ones for reuse.
I saved the wooden lolly sticks thinking they'd be great for labels but the seem to suck up the water and the writing either runs or disappears, as you say, JJB.
Another Beth alpha cucumber to replace a failure.
Sowed something yesterday.
No bleeding idea what it was - just found the three inch pot on the draining board.
Could be cosmos or zinnia or tagetes.
Could even be a pot of nothing waiting for me to sow something.
Now that my poor old brain is slowing down I really need to label things IMMEDIATELY!
