My spuds did well this year despite lousy weather and blight. The only problem with them is that they are full of slug damage. When using them I can only use about half of the flesh, the chickens have the rest! I don’t dig much and sheet compost, could this be something to do with it? If I can’t find a solution I may give up growing them.

So after I'd planted up all my potatoes from spring for earlies I had a few tubers left over. I kept them to one side thinking I'd find space for them later. I never did find somewhere to squeeze them in so instead when I dug up my first spuds in early July I replenished the soil with some bfb and planted my left over spuds. I harvested some a few days ago as the frosts had got the tops and was impressed with the crop. Not as many useful spuds as first crop but plenty enough, certainly worth doing in the future.

While at allotment yesterday I harvested a single shye of potatoes which were ample for my Sunday dinner.Or so I thought.

They were Desiree, looked fine and were a decent size. To my dismay after peeling them when I cut into them some of the centres were mushy? They weren't discoloured and you wouldn't realise they were mushy until you touched them? I have never had this problem with any spuds before and hope the rest aren't similarly infected.
I haven't googled it yet but just wondered if others had had this problem before?

I think I have decided on a little experiment with some first earlies.

Using 3 30ltr pots I am going to put 3 seed potatoes in each with different growing mediums

1 x 50 50 mix straw and normal soil from the plot
1 x well rotted manure
1 x compost from the compost bin

Jazzy is the potato of choice

Anyone tried anything similar?

As usual, I'm looking for the Other Way of growing things!!

1. Conventionally, Potatoes are planted in trenches.
2. As the potatoes show above the soil, they're earthed up.
3. Earthing up is done to stop the potatoes seeing the light and turning green and poisonous.
4. No dig gardeners lay the spuds on the soil and cover with compost/straw.

My questions - after earthing up, do more spuds grow higher up the stem above the original soil level?
............Or. do the spuds form deeper in the ground?

Why am I asking?
Could you grow spuds in a very shallow bed, say 4" deep on a solid base or in a shallow planter, rather than in a bucket?
Earth them up with cardboard or perforated plastic?

Just asking?
