Growing scraps.

Whilst OH in bed yesterday afternoon I watched this weeks Alan Titchmarsh prog about growing at home.
Normally, it’s background noise while I read but.........

One of the presenters who has a smaller garden than mine (so iris possible) said about a window box to grow scrap veg in.

Eyes glazing over, brain cell kicking it’s stroppy neuron into action and trunk quivering I watched enthralled.

The lady presenter used leek, spring onion, celery and fennel root ends.

Put into glasses and left to root. She did say as she planted them into her window box she didn’t know what would happen once in compost.

This is my experiment.

I often do this, Neffa, but you have to be careful not to let them get too wet as they rot.

Never heard of it before so thought I’d give it a go.

Celery and fennel may sprout leaves but they won't grow bulbs'stalks as all they want to do now is to flower and set seed.
Leeks and spring onions are better. I harvest the edible parts whilst leaving the roots in the soil to regrow.

Memorably, I tried to root a Brussels sprout! It did root but it also stank - so don't try that one!

The brussel sprout stank? How weird!

I will give this a go after I use veg that are suitable.

I bought some heritage tomatoes at Morrison the other day and they're all delicious. There are yellow, orange and white tomatoes in there too, so I'll be saving seeds from them for next year, or might even try them in the kitchen window!

I’ve never tried the scraps growing thing. Well not since I was a kid in single digits. I’m very pleased with my celery. It’s got a root coming as well.

Bob did an Oban shopping trip last week and got lettuce. Took it out of its bag and it still had a root ball on it. In the shape of a 3” pot. After we discovered that, we actually read the bag and it was deliberate. To keep it fresher for longer.
That got planted up. It’s just starting to think about growing again.
