I thought 4 was winter honeysuckle, maybe with flowers that have gone over. If it started to flower November/December, the flowers would be over now.

Could be but the stems on mine aren't that colour.
A better photo would be fab.

You're right. The stems on mine stayed green even when quite woody.

Thanks for all your replies. It is probably not the best time of year for photographs so:

1. could be perennial cornflower
2. flowering currant
3. hebe
4. could be Abelia, pittosporum tenuifolium, winter honeysuckle or something else (better photograph if possible flowers/bracts, leaves).

I've sent her a link to the thread so she can see your replies. She is living in London.

Well I got to visit my daughter on Wednesday. There are 2 more shrubs that I have taken photos of if anyone can identify?

They do look like these thank you. I'll let her know. There is also a largish patch of ground elder in one border that she was not happy to hear about. Not sure she will be able to get rid of it.

I agree with Scarlet - Skimmia & laurel.

I would use weed killer on it.

I didn't amd I've regretted it every since, tried covering it for years and it just creeped out the sides Sad. Digging out spade fulls, hand weeding - nothing gets rid of it. I would weed kill several times and don't plant in that area until it's gone.

Sorry to everyone who doesn't use weed killer but there are some occasions when there's isn't any other options.

This photo was taken this week - ground elder amongst my rose stems. I just keep digging it away trying not to damage the roots of plants I want to keep. It's in my lawn too Sad it's hard work.
