Pest ID - Admin - 20-08-2020 Vine Weevils Vine Weevils are a common garden pest in the UK attacking both outdoor and indoor plants. Container grown plants are particularly susceptible. The adult weevils feed on the leaves but the real damage is done by their larvae munching on the roots of your plants. I caught them red handed in the sweetcorn patch and one came out and wiped its beak on the fence. [attachment=1275] In previous years I had been blaming mice for this and they seem to attack it before it is really ready. I suspect tits may be involved as well as a great tit was lurking near by. RE: Pest ID - JJB - 15-09-2020 I found my corn attacked by a single caterpillar boring into the centre of the cob. This year is the the first time I've encountered this pest in my corn. It appears that a variety of corn borer is able to establish in southern areas due to the warmer weather RE: Pest ID - Small chilli - 21-03-2021 Fungus gnats Lots of them! I don’t see that’s any crueler than them dieing stuck to fly tape. I’m removing the top 1cm of compost from all the pots, replacing & covering with gravel. And I’ll Hoover up adults every day for the next week. See if that helps. No idea what I’m going to do if they’re in the raised bed!! But that been covered since late September and it’s not been watered since then either. If they are in the bed I might have to get some of the fungus gnat nematodes. RE: Pest ID - Veggie - 24-03-2021 Read something about sprinkling Cinnamon powder on the surface to control fungus gnats. You might need to buy it by the ton for your poly, SC. Thanks veggie. I do actually buy cinnamon in bulk. . I’ve not been able to Hoover the last couple of days ( don’t fancy extensions leads & electrical connections laying around the garden in the rain) and the numbers are back up to what I photographed. I’ll just keep fighting them as & when I can. RE: Pest ID - Veggie - 24-03-2021 Goggle it, SC. Some say to use it dry, others to mix with water and spray it on. Not tried it myself but I might try it on some seed modules with a problem! RE: Pest ID - Moth - 25-03-2021 As I understand it, cinnamon doesn't kill the gnats, it kills the fungus they live on. |
