Lavender Advice - Broadway - 03-08-2020

Morning Folks

I want to replace the rickety old fence at the entrance to the plot with a row of lavender and wondered what peoples thoughts were regards seeds v cuttings?

Is it too late this year to start anything?

You can take cuttings now - no idea about seeds.
Takes a while to grow into anything substantial - its more of an "edge" than a "hedge".

You would need to be careful which type of lavender you use. Huh I grew some from seed and transplanted them in my herb garden. After they have have flowered I will be moving them to another spot as they are aren't a compact plant and are prostrate, growing along the ground , tatty and definitely no good as a boundary. Rolleyes

Munstead lavender seems to be more clump forming and vertical growing, but there are loads of different varieries to choose from. Wink

RE: Lavender Advice - Can the Man - 03-08-2020

I’ve had great success this year growing English lavender from seed. I grew nearly 40 plants to do exactly as you’re  looking to do. I have planted them out of modules into small pots to harden off the plants, I have since sowed more seeds but these are struggling I think there is a certain time frame in which they germinate. I know the seeds were in the modules in the poly tunnel for weeks before they started showing, but the 2nd lot germinated in about 2 weeks.

Thanks folks, I think I'll take some cuttings later this week as I'm probably too late for seeds this year.

I would take plenty as they don't all succeed, for me at any rate.
