Tomato favourites - and not so favourites - JJB - 14-07-2020
I've been musing again.
We all grown so many different types of toms, for all sorts of different reasons - eating, snacking, salads, sauces, etc.
What's your favourite, for what purpose, and why. Or put another way, which toms do you grow every year, come what may, and which ones would you never grow ever again.
Two of of my regulars are sungold and sweet aperatif, as I like a sweet tomato to snack on.
Shirley is a salad size I like.
Black Russian is a beefsteak I seem to grow year on year.
Whilst I grow many other varieties it's probably because I just happen to have the seeds rather than a preference for their taste.
One I won't be growing again is Glacier, I found it tasteless.

Sungold for lunch, Prince Borghese for sun-drying, St Pierre for stuffing, San Marzano for bottling. Those are the must haves.
Green zebra, never again. Too sharp, sour & thick skinned!

Black Icicle - fab taste, huge crops and very reliable.Tasty fresh but also very good for cooking.
Black cherry - lovely taste and great for snacking.
Gardeners delight - you have to grow a red cherry and I don't think you can eat it?
Latah - I often grow this as I like to grow some bush toms early - then the cordons take over later. This is early but also has a good taste.
Rambling redstripe - does have a thick skin but I like the taste and has a huge number on it.
Black Russian, orange banana, are a couple of others that I usually grow.

Only have 2 on my permanent list.
Sungold - for everything because it’s awesome
Buffalo horn - for everything because it’s awesome
Everything else is new to me this year. So will have to wait a while for my verdict. There’s a couple that I’m impressed with how they’re growing. So if flavour is good as well they’ll be getting added to my permanent list.

Always grow:
Rambling Red Stripe and a few mini toms for early sowing.
I'm eating RRS this evening in a courgette, tomato and veggie sausage stirfry. Scraped the seed out first for saving!
Halina (seeds from nellie-m) - large toms, heavy cropping.
Gardener's Delight - as Scarlet says. To me its how a tomato should taste.
Usually grow Black Icicle - but not this year as I couldn't cope with the straggliness last year and it took over the GH
Don't grow Sungold (too sweet and F1) or Shirley (also F1).
Dont grow green or white toms as they're always a disappointment.
Stopped growing any currant sized toms - too fiddly for little return.
Don't grow anything described as beefsteak/giant/mammoth - wait too long for them to ripen and then they're split and difficult to slice.

quick agree with the not growing green ones. Really don’t fancy them at all & when do you know they’re ripe ?
also agree with the pointless currant size toms.
