Cutting back on your dinner plate! - Veggie - 22-07-2025

Just read a news item about food price rises and how people are coping. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cn5kvv9n10go

Research has shown that people are making simpler meals in order to reduce cost. 
"Almost 7 in 10 Dinner plates include fewer that six components" said the researchers. 

Seems I've been cutting back for years as I'd be hard pressed to think of many meals I've made eaten with more than six components - assuming that means something like meat and five vegetables? 
Not sure that I really understand what they're trying say here. Thought a  standard meal was something like fish chips & peas, or meat and two veg with maybe a Yorkshire pud and gravy. Maybe a stirfry, a curry or casserole would have more than six ingredients - but, is an ingredient a "component"?
How many "components" do you put on your dinner plate?

YS summat plus as many veg as I think P will fit on his plate. Yesterday was crispy prawns (full price but discounted for Tesco clubcard) some YS veg spring rolls needing eating up from the freezer, Lee Kum Kee sweet sour sour pouring sauce. Micro egg fried rice. Sir fried veg (beans cucumber, courgette, onion broccoli florets, pepper, tomatoes to garnish, ginger, garlic, sauce from a bottle of Lee Kum Kee Mushroom vegetarian stir fry sauce. I must admit it was rather a full plate. Tonight is YS deluxe fish pie, broccoli, beans, courgettes & a roasted huge tomato.
I asked my pal today if she ate any veg, she said not very many. In her case I can't think where the six components would come from. Although we purposefully have rather small dinner plates, I couldn't cram any more on them.

YS Fish pie here too but with tomato and beans only. So I'm 3 components short of a "six component meal". Not deliberately cutting back - just didn't need any more on my plate.

Majority of the time mine is two components utilising meat, eggs & fish. I do use some 'flavourings' like avocado,olives, pepper and allotment grown onions now and again? Yogurt,Kefir and blueberries are my go too's that arent savoury. Lots of butter used along with dripping to cook with but deffo no seed oils or highly processed foods.Himalayan pink salt used in abundance!

A sausage mushroom cob with assorted salads on the side but If we're counting individual items this was our evening meal.

Bread cob, Sausages, mushrooms with lettuce, toms, cucumber, spring onions, a quinoa salad, 'sweet corn, celery, peas, sweet peppers' plus some coleslaw, 'cabbage, carrots, onions'.
Do they count oils, vinegars and chutney.

I think if we had less than 6 components we'd all be looking for seconds. I wonder if pizza counts as 1.

Doesn't it just show that even the BBC can roll out some unbelievable junk. Or is it just us that are unusual? My two girlfriends don't eat veg much so they'll have quiche & salad or perhaps meat, potatoes & one veg. I can pass on the occasional courgette, handful of beans or cucumber but they rubbish at getting rid of my surpluses.
