Rock dust - Small chilli - 19-01-2025
I have been and still am creating a lot of rock dust. Today I suddenly wondered if I could use it? I know volcanic rock dust is used. Not sure if granite dust has any value/ properties worth adding to compost or garden? Anyone any idea?

Some organic gardeners use stone dust on their fields. While rock dust does not provide significant amounts of phosphorous, sulfur or nitrogen and is not a true fertilizer, it provides trace minerals. The fine nature of the dust provides an increase of the surface area of the stone so water dissolves the minerals and provides them to the plants. I once used rock dust on tomatoes which was a waste of money as it did nothing at all and was quite expensive from memory? I have no idea what granite dust does though!

I fell for the rock dust hype when I first started growing. There's no harm in adding it to your soil, but unless it is very deficient in certain minerals, you probably won't see any effects. It also takes years and years for the minerals to become plant-available.
