Climbers - Small chilli - 13-10-2023

What’s everyone favourite climbers? Do you go for flowers or foliage? Are there any climbers you wouldn’t grow?

I need a couple more for along the fence in the cottage garden area. So far I have honeysuckle, clematis president ( big purple flowers) . A rose, small bright pink flower, variety unknown. A cutting from the place I used to clean. Also possible if the cuttings take a potato vine.
I was thinking more clematis varieties as they are so many. But happy to be lead in a different direction.

Definitely not Virginia creeper or climbing hydrangeas.

Jasmine, passionflower, grapevine.

Ooh jasmine. I like that idea. Passion flower and grape. Probably not going to do to well. Not until lots of other things have grown up to protect them from the wind.

I've mixed jasmine with honeysuckle and grapevine. Not deliberately, it just happened!
There are ornamental vines too - not just grapes.

I've been looking out for  a variegated Star Jasmine https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/93768/trachelospermum-jasminoides-variegatum-(v)/details
I saw it in a house that I went to for a freebie and took a few cuttings but they didn't grow. Its evergreen/variegated and smells divine.nce.

How about winter jasmine - the yellow one. Not exactly a climber but does well against a fence.

The variegated jasmine looks lovely. I’ve got the yellow winter flowering one. That also smells beautiful.

RE: Climbers - Veggie - 13-10-2023

I have a small leaf variegated jasmine which is nice but not very showy - nothing like the bigger, waxy leaved Star jasmine.

I've got a small leafed variegated ivy climbing over an old coal bunker and the dead common euonymus silver queen sort of climbing up a wall. Other than that it's morning glories and clematis nothing exciting I'm afraid.

Don't be so mean about the climbing Hydrangea, SC! It's a very useful plant for a cold, ugly north facing wall or fence because it self-clings and doesn't want sunshine.

For your fence, why not sow lots of morning glories in May and set them to scramble through the other plants?

That’s an idea. I’d not thought about annual climbers. Obviously not sweet peas, they’re taking pride of place in one of the beds. I’ve built them their own unique climbing frame, that’s not been revealed to you lot yet  Smile .
