What is this? - Vinny - 03-08-2023 I have this slowly taking over part of my herbaceous perennial border? Itis quite pretty but also rampant and I have no idea what it is? If you know what itis, please let me know so I can decide whether to keep it or root it out! RE: What is this? - Veggie - 03-08-2023 Looks like a rubus/bramble of some sort. The buds look like Japanese wineberry but I'm sure you'd know if you'd planted that. Is it thorny or bristly? Some brambles are used as groundcover. RE: What is this? - Vinny - 03-08-2023 Yep, thorny/bristly and rampant. Don't recall planting it? RE: What is this? - Vinny - 03-08-2023 Just had a look online and they do resemble Japanese wineberry although no fruits have formed so far. I don't recall planting this although I do remember planting what was sold as a Tayberry in that position so wonder whether it got mixed up at the nursery? I'll just have to wait ad see if it fruits then figure out how I am going to hold it in check? I remember wanting the Tayberry/Logaberry to grow along the fence but this one is branching out into the border so will take a bit of training, if that is what it is. RE: What is this? - Small chilli - 03-08-2023 That fruit forming there isn’t it? Or is that a different plant? [attachment=6885] Definitely looks like some sort of fruit producing thug to me. Good luck taming that . RE: What is this? - Veggie - 03-08-2023 Does look like "blackberry" fruit in that pic. RE: What is this? - toomanytommytoes - 03-08-2023 Perhaps a present from a bird? Just been out and checked and it was a wild bramble that was interwined with tuther 'thingy' plant. I'll just keep an eye out to see if it fruits at all, but either way it's quite decorative if I can keep it in check! RE: What is this? - MartinH - 03-08-2023 Definitely looks a lot like the wineberry in this picture which I found on this page: https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/rubus-phoenicolasius/ It's not a plant I've grown though. RE: What is this? - Veggie - 03-08-2023 [attachment=6886][attachment=6887] These are my Wineberries - one of the most disappointing fruits I ever grown. Had it for years and never eaten a fruit off it. Sorry about the photos - but you get the idea! |
