2023 Tomato Grow List - toomanytommytoes - 23-01-2023 It's nearly that time of year again. Greenhouse: grown before... Mat-Su Express - dependable, big producer, very good taste, one which I grow every year now Girl Girl's Weird Thing - amazing tomato, great taste, looks beautiful, huge producer, another one which I will grow every year Rosedale - probably the best tasting tomato last year, a few weeks later to ripen but very good yields Daniel Burson - black beefsteak, 1st year died early, 2nd year not true to type, let's hope it's 3rd time lucky now I have reliable seed from the USA new for this year... George Detsika's Italian Red - big red beefsteak, supposed to be quite early for a big tomato Polaris - black beefsteak, early and very meaty, bred by Karen Olivier from Canada (she grows outdoors so many of her breeds are early and hardy) Longhorn - elongated black ox-heart, supposed to be a big producer True Colors - beautiful multi-coloured ox-heart bred by Karen Olivier again Outdoors: Nagina F1 (Crimson Plum) - blight resistant plum Rose Crush F1 - blight resistant pink beefsteak Pink Honeymoon F1 - blight resistant pink beefsteak Maskotka Reinhard's Purple Sugar Sweet Aperitif ..and whatever comes up from the 'Melange Surprise' free packet I received last year in my tomato seed order from Cultive ta Rue (https://cultivetarue.fr/boutique/?lang=en). RE: 2023 Tomato Grow List - JJB - 23-01-2023 My list is still in a state of flux, and in the process of changing having read TMTT's list and comments So far I think I'll go with the following GH Honeycomb F1 orange cherry NEW Sungold F1 orange cherry Piccolo red cherry Picobella red cherry, experiment, seeds from a supermarket tom NEW Honeydrop - I've no idea, pics on Web are conflicting NEW Bloody butcher red cocktail sized NEW Fireworks red salad NEW this one may go outside Zlatava yellow salad greenback resistant Black icicle elongated dark one, maybe, NEW Akron F1 red salad San Marzano red plum Alicante red salad maybe Burlesque red beef NEW Buffalo horn red large horn shaped Purple cherokee purple beef NEW Old German beef NEW Maybe Gourmandia just because I have the seed and its new only one rather weedy plant survived, I don't have much faith in it producing huge toms Maybe Mat Su express because TMTT likes it. I had discounted it because I thought it was a bush variety, but Web is divided on that. Enlighten me TMTT. Sgt Pepper's heart shaped blue shoulder Possibles - Girl Girl's Weird Thing & Reinhard's Purple Sugar on TMTT's recommendation did grow these Outside all supposedly Ferline F1 Mountain magic worked well last year Primabella NEW Primavera NEW Rubyliscious Minibel NEW patio dwarf variety Garden Perle for patio Summerlast NEW for patio at end May very sturdy healthy looking plant - hope the toms taste as good All subject to change RE: 2023 Tomato Grow List - toomanytommytoes - 23-01-2023 Mat-Su Express is an indeterminate (vine) tomato which resulted from a cross between Brandywine and Bloody Butcher. It was bred by a tomato farmer who has polytunnels in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley (Mat-Su for short) in Alaska. It's inherited the earliness from Bloody Butcher and has been our first tomato to ripen two years in a row. In 2021 one plant produced 6.2kg, in 2022 5.3kg. The fruit can vary in size but in general it's a medium red beefsteak. The flavour is really good. If you have space I would highly recommend Girl Girl's Weird Thing too, and Reinhard's Purple Sugar if you like Black Cherry/Rosella. May not have room for any extra, as this year I'm allowing each plant a bit more space in the gh border to avoid the jungle effect, but I can perhaps swap out some of the others. As I said, all likely to change. RE: 2023 Tomato Grow List - JJB - 24-01-2023 I've looked at various places on the Web and found differing opinions on whether Girl Girl's Weird Thing is determinate (bush) or indeterminate (cordon) TMTT can you clarify?
