Strawberries from seed from fruit - Veggie - 06-12-2022 I've been given 5 punnets of Sensation strawberries tonight. They're huge - twice the size of some Elsanta strawberries in another punnet. My question is - what are my chances of growing strawberry plants from fruits and how would you go about it? RE: Strawberries from seed from fruit - SarrissUK - 06-12-2022 I imagine you just pick off the seeds? I have never actually done this, just thinking out loud RE: Strawberries from seed from fruit - JJB - 07-12-2022 I'd bury the fruit and leave it in the cold over winter and bring to a warmer area in early spring. I believe SC has done strawberries, I grew some of her pink strawberries from seed last year. They were very forgiving. I do wonder whether they'll be true to type though as you don't hear about propagating strawberries from seed very often. Probably because they're so easy by runners. RE: Strawberries from seed from fruit - JJB - 07-12-2022 Looking at goggle I'm completely wrong RE: Strawberries from seed from fruit - Veggie - 07-12-2022 I can't bury the fruit anyway as its all in jam pots. I've shaved off some skin and seeds which are drying on a paper towel. Not sure whether I'll pick off the seeds or just plant the skin as well. RE: Strawberries from seed from fruit - SarrissUK - 07-12-2022 I did a quick google last night about it and someone suggested running a couple of berries in a blender to loosen the seeds. That sounds destructive to me - I think the idea of peeling off skin and sowing that is a better idea. RE: Strawberries from seed from fruit - Small chilli - 07-12-2022 I’ve done it. https://gardenandgossip.org/showthread.php?tid=311 RE: Strawberries from seed from fruit - Veggie - 07-12-2022 I thought you had but was too lazy to search! What happened to the seedlings? Did they mature and fruit? But the fruit were smaller than the parent plant. RE: Strawberries from seed from fruit - Veggie - 07-12-2022 Thanks. These Sensation (may be Sweet Sensation) strawberries were the biggest I've seen. Palm of your hand size - 6 in a 280gr punnet. Also had a punnet of Elsanta and the difference was noticeable. Elsanta, small, juicy and overripe - Sensation, large and under ripe, white top, huge leaves. Just hoping the jam sets tonight. |
