RE: The Bean Dilemma - SarrissUK - 05-04-2023

I don't really grow beans for saving seeds, but I have always had to plant beans for shelling, and beans for the... pods, separately, or I have no idea if I'm picking or podding lol

RE: The Bean Dilemma - Veggie - 05-04-2023

You know you want to grow them but if you're worried about storing them, concentrate on beans for drying.
If you have too many, add them to your flower barrow.
A couple of things I've added to my decision making -
Drying beans need to be sown early as they're on the plant for longer.
CFBs are less sensitive to the weather than runner beans which don't like cold nights.
CFB/DFBs are self pollinating unlike runner beans.
Czar & Gigantes are runner beans.

After much umming and aahing, I've decided to grow an Alphabet of Beans - in other words, I'm picking one packet from each envelope of CFBs.
Tomorrow I'll sow Abundance, Birds Egg, Cosse Violette, District Nurse, (No E), Firestorm and Golden Gate.

EDIT I've found an E for Emperor of Russia DFB to complete this part of the alphabet. Big Grin

An Update on the Alphabet of Beans.
The first to germinate, within a couple of days, were Garrett's Cosse Violette beans. Next up, just, is the District Nurse from the Wales Seed Hub.
The other beans are old - Abundance packed 2015, Birds Egg undated but I picked them up in 2021, Firestorm packed 2014and Golden Gate 2019. I'll give them until next weekend as, every bean deserves a chance. Wink.
Meanwhile, I'll be finding some more of the Bean alphabet to sow this week.

RE: The Bean Dilemma - JJB - 11-04-2023

I'm in a bean dilemma too. The packets unsown left in the drawer look so desolate and unloved they're whispering'sow me, sow me'. I've got to sow any new (to me) ones because, well, you just have to see what they're like, don't you?. Then there's the ones that I quite liked last year, then it's a decision of how many I can accommodate and what heights. By then my mind's too boggled and I give up. Smile

RE: The Bean Dilemma - Veggie - 12-04-2023

I've been sowing more of my Alphabet of Beans this evening. Sown 3 beans of each of 20 varieties, 3 to a module. Its as much a viability test as anything. Sow by dates in brackets!

RE: The Bean Dilemma - Garrett - 20-05-2023

I have bad news regarding the Snowcap beans you sent me to grow out. Unfortunately, none of them germinated, not even a hint of a sprout emerged. I had to ditch them as they were starting to smell and were rotting away.

I tried my best!

RE: The Bean Dilemma - Veggie - 20-05-2023

thanks for trying, Garrett. Most of mine came to nothing - especially the older seeds.
