Quince - Veggie - 18-10-2022

For the first time in living memory the quince tree is laden with fruit.
I picked one today, cut it into slices and tried to eat a bit. Its a bit mouth puckering - like a lemon and very hard. I know you can make jam with them but I wondered what else - and it has to be easy.
Youtube came up with https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5tUUtsK6Ks  If, like me, you enjoy watching local people cooking in traditional ways, without gadgets, have a look.
The channel is Samovar Tea.

Following their example, I washed and chopped the quince, poured some water on brought it to the boil. It softened very quickly and the peel disintegrated - needed sugar but it is delicious. Tomorrow, I may pick some more.

If anyone has any simple recipes for Quince, please post them. I may never have this many quince again. Big Grin

The only thing I’ve ever had with quince in it was a homemade brandy quince liquor. Not made by me. No Idea how they made it but it was beautiful.

The only thing I've ever made was Quince and Pineapple jam after being given a load of both in Queensland. I made up the recipe and it was really nice. Don't have a glut of pineapples at the moment though!
I've also made Japonica jelly from the small Japanese quince that used to grow here. I'm growing some new plants from seed but it'll be a few years before they're ready to fruit. They'd be nice in your garden SC.

Quince poached with honey and sugar is delicious - with or without a pastry case, with just icecream or cream. Add apples /cinnamon on the prepared fruit for a change. I would poach the lot and freeze in portions.

I really love quince jelly...maybe a quince cheese? To eat with cheese? I have my preserving book somewhere...

I've never met a quince face to face so haven't a clue.

Thanks SC. The first recipe needs quince jelly (can you buy that?) and the second one assumes you can add them to your shopping cart. Has anyone seen quince for sale anywhere - not in Morries. Maybe I should sell mine online. Big Grin

Can’t say I’ve ever seen quince jelly. Then I’ve never looked  Big Grin .
You’d probably do quite well at selling on line if direct at the right audience ( chefs/ restaurants ) .  Cool
It could be your seed buying fund  Big Grin
