Ticks! - Scarlet - 31-05-2020

Ticks or tic? I'm not sure?
Anyway waht do you lot use to stop them? Those drops, collars etc?
I've just taken off over 40 from my collies ears Sad not a great job when I've come in from the garden gone 8 ready for a glass of fizz.

Yuk!!
I give my dogs a tablet (Nexgard Spectra) every month which is supposed to treat fleas, ticks, various worms and prevent lungworm and heartworm. https://www.vetuk.co.uk/pet-meds-prescription-only-nexgard-spectra-c-21_2310/nexgard-spectra-chewable-tablets-for-medium-dogs-p-21511
My dogs have such thick fur that the flea stuff you drop on their necks was very difficult to apply so the Vet suggested these tablets which the dogs eat like treats.
I've never found any ticks on them but we don't tend to walk in long grass.

Front line works really well. We us it on both of our dogs.
Shame they don’t make one for people

RE: Ticks! - Can the Man - 31-05-2020

Folks all be very careful with ticks, my wife is suffering from Lymes disease which she contracted through the bite of an infected tick. She has no energy, suffers depression, gains weight, mod swings among others. She’s been on treatment for a year now and nor really getting any better. We don’t know when she was or where she as infected, the specialist has said this could take years and might never be cured.

RE: Ticks! - SarrissUK - 31-05-2020

I have never seen one since moving here to the UK. They're quite common in Sweden but look a little different. I'd not even think to check the dogs for it, but we tend to do our walking in parks with very well kept grass or on paths.

RE: Ticks! - Scarlet - 01-06-2020

We walk the fields the other side of our garden wall - more so at the moment as we haven't wanted to use the car. The grass is usually grown for hay so is long and we often have deer. I only ever wear long trousers and socks Smile when walking through it.
My boys used to go to a school that backed onto woods...often came home with them and I've always been worried about Lymes - so sorry to hear about your wife Can . I have a friend who also suffers.
But I have never seen so many in one go! It's really given me the heebee jeebies.

RE: Ticks! - Scarlet - 01-06-2020

VC, do you get a prescription for them or do you buy from your vet?

RE: Ticks! - Veggie - 01-06-2020

I buy them from the vet in packs of 3 tablets. Can't remember the price as my vets have started a monthly subscription plan that covers Nexgard, the 3 monthly wormer, nail clipping and some other stuff and its marginally cheaper than buying the tablets on their own.
