That’s brilliant FEW, I don’t know anything about bumble bees I presume the don’t make honey if they are building a nest underground.

Queen wakes up from hibernation in early spring, finds hole, makes nest, lays eggs, eggs hatch into female workers, queen lays more eggs, eggs hatch into males and new queens, they leave the nest to find a mate, old queen dies, mated new queens fatten up for winter and find a hole to hibernate in. They don't store food for long periods, so no honey.

Interestingly the bees grab little bits of dirt, pebbles or stones and block the entrance to their hole at night.
Just like us locking our doors I guess.
Then they push and shove their way out in the morning. I am fascinated!
I had to put mine up on YouTube and then have a link from here - I for one would live to see it!

Brilliant. Thanks for posting this. Fascinating the different sizes of bee - I guess the smaller are the males?

Brilliant, thanks for posting. I'll be on the look out for holes in the ground.

When I went to Jekkas Herbs the woman there did the bee talk - absolutely fascinating. Loved that bees will sleep in a snails shell and cover the entrance with a blade of grass. Fascinating

Brilliant, FEW. Buff tailed bees, bombus terrestris. The big ones with clearly buff bums are males, probably been turfed out now they are adult and not allowed back in so the workers can concentrate on rearing new queens. The workers are the smaller ones with tails that are much whiter rather than buff.
