2022 Tomato Grow List - toomanytommytoes - 08-12-2021

Anyone else already planned their tomato grow list for next year, or am I just a bit sad?  Big Grin

Firstly, gonna try Latah and Oregon Spring for some early tomatoes.

Then for the main season...

Greenhouse:

Bear Creek - black beefsteak
Daniel Burson - black beefsteak, giving it a second chance as it died early from black mould this year
Girl Girl's Weird Thing - bicolour beefsteak, similar look to Pink Berkeley Tie Dye, a mutant/accidental cross of Green Zebra
Heshpole - Heart Shaped Potato Leaf, potato leaf pink oxheart
Mat-Su Express - my favourite of 2021 with excellent production, earliness and taste
Rosedale - black/pink beefsteak
Rebel Yell - pink beefsteak
Sgt. Pepper's - oxheart tomato with anthocyanin 'blue' shoulders

Outdoors:

Bush cherries - Golden Nugget, Maskotka, Koralik, Lizzano F1 (blight resistant)
Vine - Nagina/Crimson Plum F1 (blight resistant plum)

Even though every year I say I won't grow vines outdoors anymore, I can't resist temptation and want to save seed to distribute so will have to find some space for Primabella, Sweet Aperitif, Reinhard's Purple Sugar, Matt's Hornet and Goldkrone.  Rolleyes

Have you got space to grow anything else?  Big Grin . Wow that’s a fantastic list!
I have also made my choice for 2022 . No tomatoes!
The same goes for all veg until I have my new garden. I’ll probably cave though. So I might be back with a list.  Rolleyes

You're not the only one. I was making notes last night after researching the seeds I got in the swap. I don't have a greenhouse so all of mine have to go outside but I did notice some of the beefsteaks were described online as early so I'm trying a few of those in addition to my usual cherries. I have room for ten vines so I'll be growing the following (ones I haven't grown before are marked with "new"):

Galina - yellow cherry PL vine
Green Zebra - green/yellow striped medium vine
Atomic Grape - multi coloured grape vine (new)
Matt's Hornet - striped grape vine (new)
Malachite Box - green beefsteak vine (new)
Mat-Su Express - red beefsteak vine (new)
Northern Lights - orange/pink beefsteak vine (new)

I'll probably have two each of the cherry ones and just one each of the beefsteaks, but I can decide on that nearer to planting as I always sow more than I need and give the spares to my siblings.

I'm also growing some determinates in large pots:
Tumbling Tom Red - trailing red cherry
Tumbling Tom Yellow - trailing yellow cherry
Golden Grape - yellow gooseberry sized bush

The tumblers always give me ripe fruit by mid June, even outside, so I enjoy growing those as I find them very easy and reliable.

Looking forward to reading everyone's lists!

Having soil in my main greenhouse that must be quite diseased, my main focus is getting a good crop. This year I'm going to try grafting using Roma VF as the rootstock. I've still got some submarine seeds left so will do some on those as well. I'm not going to be very adventurous and grow:

Alicante as my main variety for cooking and bottling. The skins come off easily, it has plenty of juice and has very little greenback.
Gardeners delight gives heavy crop of what I consider very tasty tomatoes
Orange Banana crops well and goes to a paste on cooking that helps thicken dishes well.
Galina I like the lemony smell of the ripe fruit on the plant and they keep for a long time. Just have to keep off the ground away from any mice.

I tried Black Russian last year but wasn't particularly impressed. I should probably grow a beefsteak as well.

My list is the same as last year apart from Cherry Drops

Black Cherry - Dark and sweet,
San Marzano - good for roasting and sauces
Gardeners Delight - I've always grown them
Indigo Cherry Drops - sent as replacement seeds.

Really like this thread.

Now the seed swap has arrived I too am doing some serious thinking, will probably change my mind  a 1000 times.
It's always a really difficult decision.  I will definitely try some of the swaps but I want a selection of cherry, salad and beefsteak. I don't succeed too well with bush in the gh or outside so may try one or two  bush type in really big pots this year rather than MFBs. I've room in the gh  for about 15- 20 and I'm sure the overflow will get put outside to feed the blight.  Crimson crush did well outside fighting off the blight last year, but it even affected those in the gh's Sad

My list will be published shortly.

Where does everyone go to for buying tomato seeds?

New to me this year is Real Seeds "House" tomato - that'll be one of my January sowings with Rambling Red Stripe and a couple of windowsill type toms.
After that, still thinking!

Depends what sort of tomatoes you're looking for. More well known varieties I go with Premier Seed Direct or any of the other cheaper seed shops. SimplySeed, Pennard Plants, MoreVeg and Victoriana Nursery also have an interesting range.

More obscure varieties I usually have to buy from Europe:

If you have space I would really recommend the determinate oxheart EM Champion which I also sent in to the seed circle. It's pretty early, very high yielding and tasty. Bit of a sprawler so needs good support.
