Not what it said on the tin. - Small chilli - 08-08-2021

Some one gave me some gladioli bulbs, or so I thought.
Are these those things you don’t like veggie? Can’t remember the name.
I was getting really excited as they were starting to open, never growing gladioli before so I didn’t realise until the flowers opened that they weren’t.

I did notice today 3 that look a little more promising. What do you think?

Sorry to have to confirm that those orange flowers are the dreaded Montbretia!! If you'd like some more, I can send you a few skip loads!!
The other, fat buds look more interesting. Smile

Thanks veggie. How do you get rid of your montbretia after you’ve pulled them up?

I burn the corms in the bonfire and chuck the leaves in the chook run or compost. If I'm feeling soft, the flowers go in a vase!

Wonderful plant that you have on your site Sc, I would suggest that you spread it on your road and get your heavy plant to run over it, well hopefully you haven't sent the digger away yet

It’s not on my house site thankfully. They’re in big pots in my garden. So they will get pulled up as they flower. Think I’ll crush the bulbs with a hammer, then put them in the fire bin.

Actually they are a nice splash of colour but you are best to keep them contained, so keeping them in a pot would be ok

Montbresia was re-named crocosmia a few years ago for some reason?

It is quite invasive but I like it. You can get varying colours from yellow through to bright red.

I have a clump of the basic orange coloured version in my garden but fancy some of the giant bright red ' Lucifer' variety. Smile

Most plants are nice in small doses but when they become invasive pests they have no place here. Unfortunately, Montbretia/crocosmia are deaf and can't hear all the names I call them. If they did they might pull up their corms and leave. Big Grin

I have a vermillion/scarlet one which might be lucifer, out now, it has more dense colourful flowers than SCs pic. It's a bit invasive and needs sorting every couple of years but not as bad as Veggie's . Also have a cerise pink clump that flowers in the spring that's very well behaved.
P calls the corms dog's blx (excuse my 'French')
