Growing Old Peas! - Veggie - 15-05-2021

I don't usually grow peas for podding - just mangetout - so I have a box full of old pea seeds.
In an attempt to clear out some of these oldies, I've sown:-

Lord Leicester (Real Seeds packed 2014)
Victorian Colossal (either Victoriana sow by 2012 or saved by Norfolk Grey 2014)
Telephone (Franchi, sow by 12/2015)
Ultra U (HSL 2012)
Ne Plus Ultra (HSL ?date)
Serpette Guillote (Real Seeds from Seed swap about 2012)

What are my chances of germination? I sowed them on May 5th.

I’d probably start to worry! Peas don’t usually take 10 days to germinate. But I wouldn’t give up yet either  Smile

I didn't say there has been no sign of life but I wondered which ones you think may be viable and which are dead as a dodo!!

Just checked Real Seeds "How long do seeds last" and they say Peas 3-5 yrs+

Just to add there is one clear winner and a couple of also rans. Some seem to have fallen at the first hurdle.

Sorry miss understood.
Well then I think some of all have germinated. But you’ve had best success with these 3.
Ultra U (HSL 2012)
Ne Plus Ultra (HSL ?date)

Funnily enough, they're the non-starters - although there's still time.

The leading pea is Lord Leicester, by a mile.
Colossal and Telephone are trying but struggling. May still fall by the wayside.

Maybe I need another rummage in the Pea Box.

I chose those very scientifically. They had the oldest dates and I can’t pronounce any of them  Big Grin .

Go on sow some more  Cool

How about Bullroyd Bean-Pea 2013 HSL. The seeds look like raisins.

Also found:-
Harold Idle HSL 2012
Commander HSL 2012
Lancashire Lad HSL 2013
Stephens HSL 2005

I did try growing some of these last year without much success apart from Commander - saved a few seeds of his.

The problem with growing these unusual peas, when you only have a few of each is, deciding whether you're growing them to eat or to save seeds. I'm always torn - but there neve seem to be enough peas for a meal anyway!!

That would be tricky! Eat or save. Think I’d want to try a few for flavour taste test and save for seeds . bullroyd bean pea look very interesting and very pretty flowers.

Peas are another veg I’ve not really tried growing many varieties.
I’ve just been on real seeds for seed saving information and discovered soup peas. I didn’t realise there was different peas for drying  Blush . Which is just me being a bit thick. You have different varieties for drying beans , so why wouldn’t you for peas  Rolleyes .
