Bee rescue - Small chilli - 14-04-2021 You have to rescue bees when they get in the tunnel or greenhouse don’t you. I used to wait till they were buzzing around at a height I could reach them. Then pot a pot over them & slip some paper or something between pot and tunnel wall. Take them out & let them go. It worked but it was time consuming, stressful for the bee and there’s always the chance of accidentally hurt the bee by trapping a leg os something. I came up with a new approach at the end of last season. I pick a small bunch of flowers. After the bee has been bouncing around and getting tired. Just hold the flowers up to the bee. They climb on for a feed and you can walk them outside stress free. [attachment=2682] [attachment=2683] For the bees that rest out of reach. Stick your little bunch of flowers in the end of a cane. They're coming in after the kale flowers here. RE: Bee rescue - Bren - 14-04-2021 That way seems easier than my takeout tub and piece of card. RE: Bee rescue - Can the Man - 14-04-2021 I just leave the door open and they make their own way out, but I do like your bait to tease them out. RE: Bee rescue - PyreneesPlot - 14-04-2021 Great idea! I tried putting a pot with flowers just outside but it seemed to bring more in. We must have dense bees! I find too many dead ones if I don't do a bit of bee herding before shutting the door RE: Bee rescue - Small chilli - 14-04-2021 (14-04-2021, 10:33 PM)PyreneesPlot Wrote:Same here. Especially this time of year. Not enough in there for them to feed on.(14-04-2021, 10:29 PM)Can the Man Wrote: I just leave the door open and they make their own way out, but I do like your bait to tease them out. RE: Bee rescue - Veggie - 14-04-2021 [attachment=2692] These flowers are attracting the bees into the GH - kale, landcress, rocket and some Oriental veg. The kale flowers smell really sweet - more like roses than brassicas. RE: Bee rescue - Mark_Riga - 15-04-2021 Wasps have no problem finding their way out but bees must not have very good vision or are a bit thick. May be that's why they are called bumble bees. |
