RE: Begonia Rex "Escargot" - JJB - 06-05-2025 That's possible, looking at t'net it suggested planting in soil slurry to get it used to being out of water. I fear it may be gasping. I don’t think it's going to survive. I didn't read about slurry until it had been tx for a few days. No worries though I have other babies and if all of them grew I would be faced with finding adoptive homes. It never really re-hydrated and eventually rotted. In hindsight I probably should have put it in water instead of laying it on compost. ![]() I think I'm going to buy a plant so I can experiment again
RE: Begonia Rex "Escargot" - Veggie - 06-05-2025 I can send you a couple of leaves if you want to try again? But I will pass, at least for now. Good luck to everybody trying this, looks like it's going pretty well. RE: Begonia Rex "Escargot" - JJB - 15-02-2026 I've killed all my snail begenias. 1 at the start and 2 that were thriving but are no more. I think my potting mix was too dense and they died of being waterlogged. Anyone know the secrets of keeping them going, are they particularly temperamental or is it me? RE: Begonia Rex "Escargot" - Veggie - 15-02-2026 Its you! I only water mine when the leaves are droopy. Don't chuck them out yet. Let them dry off. Put them somewhere you'll forget them and come back to them in a few weeks time. See if there's any sign of life then. They seem remarkably resilient to me. My original Snail is still in the pot/compost that it was given to me. It would probably benefit from splitting but, that takes effort, so i won't! RE: Begonia Rex "Escargot" - Small chilli - 15-02-2026 I’ve stopped watering mine so often. It seems happier. It’s not happy due to the lack of light. But it either has some warmth and little light from the caravan or lots of light and little warmth from the tunnel. RE: Begonia Rex "Escargot" - Veggie - 15-02-2026 Both of mine are away from direct light, some distance from the windows. One on the upstairs landing and the other in the downstairs hallway. RE: Begonia Rex "Escargot" - JJB - 16-02-2026 I fear they are really really demised, they were never robust to start with. I have left the strongest dead one to its own devices for a few weeks, more in hope than any constructive plan, but no show of growth. I'm a murderer.

One leaf grows another one dies. I don’t even want to talk about my poor Christmas cactus! |
