RE: 2025 - What I did today - SarrissUK - 19-08-2025

Well... I have NOT hoovered for months (Jay does it all, bless him)

We have had fantastic weather the last couple of weeks so I have....
- planted some cuttings from elder and hydrangea in a spot that was recently cleared of couch grass.
- sowed radish, various kinds of beans and peas
- planted out leeks
- moved a red currant bush that I planted behind the barn. It's the only thing that survived - the blueberries, black currants, gooseberry and raspberries all gave up the ghost. The ground is very, very stony, and I didn't realise until I was in the middle of planting them, and then I ran out of time to move them before they met their maker. The red currant bush has joined the rhubarb, raspberry tree and the raspberry in front of the house.
- collected loads and loads of aquilegia seeds from plants of all colours (I can't remember which colours they all were!). Are they good to sow now, for little plants ready for spring?
- been chanterelle picking, along with lingonberries and other mushrooms. I have a gigantic mushroom book that I am learning loads from.
- found that blueberries, or bilberries as they are called in the UK, are having a really bad year here. I have found at most twenty berries since I started looking.
- assisted Jay in cutting up a huge tree that fell during a storm last winter, with the aim to have it for firewood. We cut it in half and since it had fallen across a narrow part of the pond, we had to drag it up the other side with the car. It went swimmingly, pardon the pun. We will drag up the rest at the weekend.
- been weeding all four veg beds, and not much is coming up since then. I just need to weed the paths now.
- got the shredder fixed, and planning on using that lots over the coming weeks, as we are pruning the hazelnuts, coinciding hopefully with the harvest. The nuts are a good size! The bushes are just desperate for pruning. If we want to, we can prune the neighbour's hazel bushes too, but I think they're too shaded to ever have a decent harvest.
- established that we are not getting a single plum this year.

Sowed some leaves in the Pot garden. Collected half a trug of Knopper galls from beneath the oak tree. If you don't know what they are, they look like an acorn that's been crossed with a conker - amusing to look at but painful to step on - so I'm trying to collect them as I'd don't want Ted hurting his paws on them https://www.wildlifetrusts.org/wildlife-explorer/galls/knopper-gall-wasp They're being sold on the Bay for making Ink!!

After walking Kato this morning it was shorts off and long trousers on as I had some chainsawing to do. I have already built a bench framework for my new shed and new I had some scaffold planks that I could cut into 28" sections for the top of bench.
The problem was gettig to them as I had to do a bit of jungle warfare at the top of the garden where they were, cutting back Ivy and mile-a-minute vine which had taken over.
Once I had cleared a path to the bits of scaffold planks I retrieved them and marked all the cuts before fiiring up the chainaw.
I got my portable cutting trestle out and managed to get all the planks cut to size and fitted loosely.

I had  a big pile of 4x4 posts that I had seperated out of the wood I srounged from next doors old fence. While I had the chainsaw I chopped all these up into logs for the logburrner avoiding any nails that wefe still present.

The massive pile of logs are still at the top of the garden as I was too knackered to start shifting them with the wheelbarow. Maybe a job for Friday?

Bramble and vinca clearance to fill the garden waste bins, for tomorrow's collection.
Cut back some ivy and brambles that have invaded the log store/drying area/spare flowerpot hoard. Ted decided that there must be something living amongst the flowerpots and caused an avalanche of pots of all shapes and sizes while he looked for the beast! Clearing, sorting and getting rid of most of the pots will be a job for a rainy day.

Saved some seeds, watered a few pots, harvested a few bits for tea. Did a little bit of weeding. Made a rope from jute twine. Then made a monkey fist knot one end and tied on 2 small metal buoys and old cork float. Also cleaned out the recycling wheelie bin ( always clean out the bins the day they’ve been emptied)

RE: 2025 - What I did today - SarrissUK - 23-08-2025

I've strimmed a bit of grass around a mock orange near the pond, which I had cut down to about two foot high. Before that it was just very old straggly stems. So, it'll look better next year, with the handful of fresh shoots that have emerged this year. I took about twenty cuttings from what I cut back and put in two large plant pots. The ones I took earlier this summer have taken very nicely, so I'm hoping to have enough plants to make a bit of a hedge next year.

We have struggled with the fallen tree again today, now with the middle part of the tree. I could pull it up to the bank of the pond quite nicely, but it then wedged itself between the bank and an old rotten tree stump. It took some physical force to remove the stump, and to wedge a couple of planks of wood and a metal sheet underneath it so it could be dragged at least half way up the bank. We will need to cut it in half to get the bottom bit out, and then it's almost done. The pond gets more light too.

We are planning to clear most of the trees on the other side of the pond, as leaves and rubbish are falling in the pond and clogging it up.

I've checked the hazelnuts again today and they're still not ready to harvest, though I'm finding some on the ground. I might have to just go for it tomorrow and pick them all, then cut back the hazel bushes to regenerate them for next year.
