RE: Giving up for Lent - Vinny - 19-02-2026

I didn't mind Sunday School. I got an old penny off my parents for the collection, which I put in the Beechnut chewing gum machine attached to the outside of the shop next to the church. ( Every fourth penny got two Beechnut packs, if you were lucky?)

And when we got home afterwards we always had custard & jelly! Big Grin

I , like Vinny haven’t been to Sunday school for a while. If I’m honest I didn’t go very often anyway. I remember being absolutely outraged by being made to go to school on a Sunday.
I went to Sunday school mostly because they gave you biscuits.  Big Grin

RE: Giving up for Lent - Veggie - 20-02-2026

1. Books - don't buy any.
2. Books - give away a book a day
3. Stop using teabags and use looseleaf tea instead.
4. Eat homemade bread.
5. Sow a packet of seeds a day
6. No ready meals
7. No pretend meat products

Day 2 completed!
2. Another book for the bookpile which should have 40 books to give away by the end of Lent!
3. Made a pot of Duchess Earl Grey tea which is black tea with orange pieces, cornflower and rose petals, and lime leaves.
4. Ate homemade bread, 5. sowed some parsley, and cooked my meals from scratch.

I , like Vinny haven’t been to Sunday school for a while. If I’m honest I didn’t go very often anyway. I remember being absolutely outraged by being made to go to school on a Sunday. I hated the Monday to Friday stint as it was. The fact it was about religion just added insult to injury according to 6 year old me. My view hast changed    Wink .

I felt just as strongly when they tried to get me to go to brownies. That didn’t last long either. I just didn’t want to be involved with anything that involved other kids. To this day I feel the same way.

And yet here you are chatting away with all us kids.

UPDATE after 2weeks,
1. Haven't bought any books
2. I took 6 books to the seed swap and have a small pile of others to give away, not 40 yet.
3. Still making looseleaf tea and considering giving away my teabag collection. Also growing more herbs for tea so that I can be self sufficient in tea!
4. Have made a few loaves but I need to use up some of the frozen bread I found in the freezer.
5. Failed to sow seeds daily.
6. Failed on this one too as I need to use up stuff from the freezer.
7. Haven't eaten any pretend meat.

Only a few more weeks to go. Big Grin

RE: Giving up for Lent - Veggie - 02-04-2026

I've just realised that Lent ends today so its confession time. Wink

1. Books - don't buy any. Failed - I bought a couple of books from Awesome as I was afraid that they would be sold before I could buy them.
2. Books - give away a book a day. I've given away 6 and have a small pile ready to go - but it wan't be anything lilke 40 books. Failed.
3. Stop using teabags and use looseleaf tea instead. At last, a Success. Have given away most of my teabags and have switched completely to loose leaf tea. Big Grin
4. Eat homemade bread. Haven't bought any bread and have made several loaves but - I have eaten Free bread - like the Oiive bread
5. Sow a packet of seeds a day. Failed. Sowed lots but not every day.
6. No ready meals. Can't remember!
7. No pretend meat products. Eaten Quorn sausages so Failed.

I suppose One out of 7 is a positive. Big Grin

The fact that you tried is consolation enough. It's more than what I did. Congratulations.
