A lot of people think it’s slang but it’s a recognised language!Sorry to argue with you Jay but they are not very different they are almost identical in written word except for some local words. The pronunciation may sound different. I am a reasonably good Irish speaker, but I find it easier to understand the Scots Gaelic on BBC Alba when I listen to commentary on some of the Scottish rugby matches, than listening to the Irish been spoken on TG4 the Irish language program. My understanding from history was the Ulster Irish and Scots Gaelic were so similar from the migrant potato pickers going from Ulster to Scotland they had no problems understand each other. Similarities can be seen in music, dress, food etc... Within Ireland we have 4 provinces we have 4 different forms of the Irish language all written the same but pronounced slightly different, you also have certain words been used like in Munster Irish they call a fox a madra rua which translate s Ash red Dpd, whereas in Connacht Irish it’s sionnach. First time he has been home for almost 7 weeks, unfortunately had to take him back for a ‘sleepover’ to continue in his meds. Good day, light at the end of the tunnel!!
