It's called Achenbach Syndrome (or 'paroxysmal finger haematoma' if you dislike eponymous syndromes as much as I do). It's very common, especially in women (I've seen figures that suggest more than 10% of women will experience it at some point). It's supposed to be more common in people over 40, but I've had several episodes since I was in my early twenties.

Finger to swollen to straighten at moment
. It’d probably be more noticeable if I’d washed my hands before I took the photo . It’s always hurt & gone a bit black in the past, but don’t recall them swelling up quite so much. These last 2 bursting veins have really put some effort into it .
