RE: Greenfly - Mark_Riga - 16-05-2025 I've seen them on nettles in the polytunnel while weeding but also lots of lovely ladybird larvae. Reminds me of a job I need to do; collect a few and distribute them round our roses. I can close my mouth and breath through my nose (and hopefully not inhale an aphid straight into my lungs), and in the ears they just tickle.(13-05-2025, 10:35 AM)toomanytommytoes Wrote: Is any one else having to dodge clouds of aphids? I've never seen this before, they're everywhere! When I went cycling at the weekend they were getting in my eyes, mouth, nose and ears!My husband went cycling yesterday and said exactly the same! RE: Greenfly - JJB - 26-06-2025 The aphids are a real pest this year. The raspberries have been clobbered and the blackcurrant tips are all curling up around colonies of ant farmed aphids, the rose buds and dahlias are covered in blackfly. I'm losing the battle. I squish lots but it hardly makes an indentation. Any solutions? RE: Greenfly - Small chilli - 26-06-2025 (26-06-2025, 09:56 AM)JJB Wrote: The aphids are a real pest this year. I find blasting the plants with the hose on jet spray (if possible) from all angles. Really helps. The plants recover quickly from a couple of minutes brutally. But the pests reduction is worth it. RE: Greenfly - JJB - 26-06-2025 I do cultivate the ladybirds but they're overwhelmed by aphids unfortunately. I agree blasting them helps but on the soft fruit either they, or the ants fold over the leaves creating a lovely little house for the bugs, they're well protected . Back to squishing I suppose. RE: Greenfly - Mark_Riga - 26-06-2025 We have some greenfly here and quite a lot of blackfly on broadbeans and mealy bugs on cabbage but I've never seen so many ladybirds and they are everywhere. I'm hoping they will be able to control all the pests. RE: Greenfly - toomanytommytoes - 27-06-2025 Not much of an issue with aphids here anymore. They were over everything earlier in the year. The ladybirds seemed to arrive late, but now they're demolishing the aphid population in cooperation with the hoverfly larvae and parasitic wasps. I was blasting with the hose or spraying with soapy water before the predators arrived, but now there's too much risk of killing the predators too, so I'm leaving them to it. Check if you have any hoverfly eggs on the underside of the leaves, they look like tiny grains of rice. Parasitised aphids turn a gold colour, and you may see a hole in their back if the wasp has already emerged! |
