I've always been attracted to the Moon, love watching it rise in the sky, grow from a baby moon to a full moon but I've never thought much about the in between bits. Now I'm watching and learning! The Moon was spectacular tonight and very clear and bright.
Now for the lesson:-
On the 8th December there was a Full moon, known as the Cold Moon/the Long Nights Moon/the Moon before Yule. Tonight's moon is 63.6% of its size and is a Waning Gibbous Moon. (Don't ask, I don't understand that yet).

I like all that info Veggie, I've always thought of a gibbous moon as being a pregnant one and the crescent moon as having had the baby
. For me the phrase 'gibbous moon' invokes dark misty nights when witches are abroad....?on their hols, perhaps

As a kid (probably about 24) I learnt that a new moon looks like a baby in a cradle while an old moon is like an old person bent over, stooping.
Gibbous is an ugly word, I think, not one I'd want to say aloud.

I "think" I've worked out a simplified system that I'm trying to follow.
Basically, I'm looking at the Lunar Diary and ignoring all the astrology info and the days when there are 2 or 3 time changes when you can sow several types of veg during the day. That narrows it down to the days when you can only sow one type and a few days when there's one thing in the morning and another in the afternoon. I write those days in my desk diary and put the Lunar Diary away for a month.
This coming week:-
Sunday Flowers am/ Fruit after 1pm
Mon Roots
Tues Fruit
Wed Fruit
Thurs Fruit before 2pm
Fri Roots
Sat Roots
Sun Roots
This week I'll be sowing Tomatoes (maybe Aubergines/ peas/broad beans) and Onions (they're roots).

Tues Flowers to 1pm. Leaf from 2 pm
Wed Leaf
Thurs Leaf to 4pm. Fruit from 5pm
Fri Fruit
Sat Fruit to 8am NEW MOON
Sun Root from 10am

Garlic and Onions are Roots, but Leeks are Leaf plants (according to the book).
