Red Veg - Veggie - 29-08-2022

Just read another recommendation for growing red, rather than green veg, as they are less attractive to pests.
Can I ask the G&G panel if they have noticed any difference between green & red veg in terms of pest damage.
Can you recommend any Red veg to grow?
I've lost all of my PSBs and Calabrese to the pesky caterpillars this year, before I even got round to planting them out! Maybe a Red Veg Bed is the answer?

I’d agree to red veg being less attractive to pests. By no means immune, unfortunately. And the darker the better. PSB as lovely as it is. Does have a welcome sign hanging off him because most of the plant is still green Big Grin
I highly recommend red cabbage drumhead. Scarlet kale.
I’ve also grown Red sprouts, red kalettes, red onions ( but they like to bolt, given half the chance ).
Red skinned spuds is a whole different ball game. I think it depends what day of the week it is, as to whether it’s liked or disliked by pests. Never have work out which variety they don’t like as much. Proper purple spuds don’t get munched very much at all.
And obviously there’s lot of variety of red / purple podded beans & peas . Which you know more about than me    Cool

So there you go veggie a long list of things you mostly don’t grow or don’t like eating  Big Grin   Wink

I've no idea, I gave up on all brassicas because of pests, except a dwarf curly kale which can be covered, I didn't find scarlet kale particularly good anyway, pests or no pests. Only red veg I grow are onions and lollo rosso lettuce, no pests but they both usually bolt, so there's going to be a rethink on them next year.

Ooh I forgot lollo rosso lettuce. Love that. There’s a really nice red oak leafed lettuce. Name escapes me now. There’s lots of different red salad leaves.again no doubt something you’re already very familiar with  Cool .

I donn't think it's down to what you can/should grow but what you want to grow? If red vegetables don't suit your taste preferences, don't grow them. To me 'taste' is everything with stuff I grow, that's what I feel I gain from home/allotment produced stuff. Rolleyes
I did experiment with 'reds' once with the idea of incorporating them into a flower border. Red Duke of York have red foliage as well as red tubers and are reasonably pest free. Smile
I just wonder whether it's the chlorophyll in green veg that the pests prefer? Huh

Generally I do agree though that red leaved plants are less pest prone.

I have nothing against red or green veg. Don't think there's much difference when it comes to taste but if the pests think that green veg is tastier! After all, I'm growing veg for me to eat, not them. Big Grin
To test this properly I'd have to grow green and red veg alongside each other and see if there was a difference in taste and yield. Of course, I'm too random for that so I'm relying on you to tell me which are best. Big Grin

If you closed your eyes could you eat boiled red cabbage and imagine it was green/white? Huh I think I could. Smile Shame you can't get red spring cabbage! Rolleyes

^^^^^^^ https://marshallsgarden.com/products/spring-cabbage-red-flame-seeds-10204040 googled this! Cool I may need to give it a try. Rolleyes

.............oh no I won't. £6.50 inclusive of postage for 25 seeds is a bit too much I reckon!

I found Red Chard didn't get eaten as much as other chards, to me it didn't taste as nice as other chards so I stopped growing it.
