I enjoy a couple of teaspoons of mixed seeds on my weetabix in the morning. The thought occurred to me that I know what plants sunflower, pumpkin, linseed and poppy seeds come from but I've no idea where sesame seeds are from (if someone says Tesco I shall kneecap them).
The query is, has anyone tried to grow sesame and are the white seeds in my seed mix the whole seed or just the kernel?
I don’t know. I’ve often wondered and regularly considered trying to grow some. Just never got round to it. It’s on my to do list. If you try it first (I think you should
) keep us updated with its growth progress.
I think I'll leave it to you experienced plantswomen/persons to go down the growing route. I'm challenged by normal seeds without adding to the stress.
I've looked at the Web which says sesame can reach 3-5 ft tall but as you say a reasonably pretty plant.
BTW the garlic bulbils from a garlic flower that I literally bunged in an old pot of compost are growing well. I have an MFB with green hair - should I paint a face on the pot, one asks.
Stop picking on me.
You could be right, Moth.
I've just looked at "Incredible Edibles" which says that the plants grow to 90cms/35" tall and spread to 50cms/20ins. With luck I should be able to reach the top of those!
Sow indoors in spring, 6 weeks before last frost.
Update! Sesame seeds (use by 3/24) are sitting on damp kitchen roll.
I knew you'd do it. Who needs the interweb when you've got Veggie. What were the seeds like?
