This my first year of growing lilies, not a great fan personally but the OH likes them. My question is, do they multiply or are the bulbs sterile?

I have no idea of the type as it was a mixed 8 pack from Wilko's.

Also does anyone have a recomendation of any varieties?
All I know is Oriental lilies smell (nice). Asiatic ones don't smell.
They all suffer from lily beetle that eats holes in the leaves and makes them look motheaten,
I leave the bulbs in the ground and they come back every year.

Lilies I have grown in the past do multiply when they have died off leave the stems there for a few weeks then later look at the bulbs and you will see small bulbettes Smile
I am a first time Lilly grower as well. Rolleyes

I have a couple in a pot that I got from Poundland. They are 60cm (2 foot) high and no sign of flower buds. Is this normal? Huh

The buds were probably nibbled off in their infancy by lily beetle. That's what keeps happening to mine. I've decided to throw away the last of lilies I have.
Still time, Vinny, some of them grow to 4/5' before flowering.

They were supposed to be the tall flowered variety. Huh They look healthy enough apart from lack of flowers. I'll just wait and see what happens. Smile
Ones I had never seemed to bulk up, but you should be able to propagate more from removing scales from the parent bulb. I did say should - never tried it as I got fed up of lily beetles weakening them. Someone did tell me earlier this year that bug clear ultra works on them, so I may try again at some point as I love oriental lilies and snakes head fritillaria (which also used to suffer from attacks)

Before anyone tells me off for using an insecticide it will probably never get used as I never actual do what I intend to do and I would be immensely selective anyway as the wildlife has grown year on year in my garden and really wouldn't want to lose the majority of it.
I leave mine to their own devices in the same pot, they have buds on them soon there will be pink cream and yellow flowers on them.

I love them - I just pick off the beetles. Get them early and they should be fine and will bulk up if just left.

Not quite a nice as dahlias though Wink
