Lots of Dog violets in the garden now and I also have Dog daisies and Dog roses................but what does Dog mean in these names?

Without goggling, can you guess?

Wild?

I don’t know, I’ve often wondered.
Is it because they grow in groups rather than as a single plant.? Like a pack of dogs?

Will be interested to know the answer. Obviously not until everyone has had their guess 

Dogs like to wee on them. 

I think basic species that all others are bred from? Therr is also Dogwood  (Cornus family)

It cant be because they smell? Cos dog roses smell very nice...common, simple..hmm, i dunno

Did you know - The root of a dog rose was thought to be able to cure the bite of a wild dog.
