Just wondering what people think is the right time to plant onion sets out, I’m tempted to put some in a covered outdoor raised bed like this [attachment=4350]

Look forward to your comments

I think it may depend on what type you have Can?

I believe some can go out now however some are planted in March.

I'm trying seed this year.
Rather than start a new thread I just wondered whether anyone had good deals online for autumn planted onion sets? I usually plant three different varieties, Senshyu,Autumn Champion and Radar. Smile (Given up on the red varieties as they always bolt!) Rolleyes

Most of the big companies want to 'take your eyes out 'with postage costs! Angry

I am looking for about 50 sets of each cultivar.
At SimplySeed you could get a 250g bag of each for £6 plus £3.99 postage. https://www.simplyseed.co.uk/onion-sets.html

PremierSeedsDirect say their onion sets will be in stock from the 2nd week of September. Last year I remember them having Senshyu but can't recall the others. They are likely to sell out quickly (they sold out of 90kg of elephant garlic seed in under 1 hour).
The Big Boys often have Free P&P on bank holidays. Maybe wait until this weekend?

Hey Vinny

Do you pop them straight in the ground or start in modules?

Mystic Veg, your prediction has come true. DT Brown have free delivery this weekend, use code D23EHOLIDAY at checkout. They also have 20% off when you buy 4 or more packs, works out at about 30p more expensive per 250g pack than SimplySeed.

Interestingly, on the garlic bulb page you can still see last year's listings. The price has gone up £1 per 2 bulbs.

Premier Seeds Direct have their onion/shallot/garlic seed in stock now. Bit of a limited range compared to last year, but they are good value. I've just received some Shakespeare sets and Messidrome garlic (split in to individual cloves) and they are good quality.

Postage is only 89p, even for higher weights.
