A decent paint brush and you should be ok.
Lots of people sell them on Instagram.
I use roofing slates for table mats had them for 20 years now I stick those sticky cushion feet on the back.

Suggestion- you could paint a picture of what is suppose to be planted on the slate

You could permanently paint the numbers 1, 2 to .... on them. And then, whereever you record when you sowed your whatsits (which everybody does) , you would enter the label number as well.

Thats a brilliant idea, I could make up a set of those as an anniversary present would I be better cleaning them first or would it make them more authentic if I just stick some cushion feet on them

I stick them in the dishwasher first and then stick the feet on them. Run a little olive oil, very sparing amount to blacken it. I also use a very large one for the centre of the table for hot plates. All my friends had them as gifts
