Growing Old Peas!

Don't make me list my "soup peas".
IIRC Peas can be Early, Late and Maincrop, Autumn or Spring sown, dwarf, medium or tall, small peas or marrowfat type, edible pods like mangetout and sugarsnap...........
not to mention all the different flower and pod colours.
There's a whole world of variety out there and I struggle to grow enough for a meal!!

I'm not going to bother with podded peas again, the bucket I have in the gh is very interesting, but you need an awful lot of pods ripening at the same time for a bowl of peas. The gh ones will probably be eaten as treats raw. My bijou are flowering but I put too many seeds in one MFB and they are overwhelming the tub, the gh and me as I try to get by them. They are going to have to be moved but I expect the roots have gone through the bottom of the pot into the border soil and when moved may lead to plant collapse. As for all your peas Veggie, I've never heard of any of them, so no guessing from me.

The problem with growing these unusual peas, when you only have a few of each is, deciding whether you're growing them to eat or to save seeds. I'm always torn - but there neve seem to be enough peas for a meal anyway!!

I've taken 10 or so peas from each packet (all of them in most cases) (except Commander which I grew last year) and Bullroyd Bean Pea and wrapped them in damp kitchen paper to check for germination. they'll probably rot but it saves on wasting compost.

I've stopped picking the Bijou in the GH and I'm leaving them for seed - to save buying more for next year. All ready have some planted outside and more germinating so don't need to eat the GH ones.

I’m joining you ( sort of ) In your old pea growing antics. I’d got very lazy and not been picking pea shoots regularly. So I’ve decanted them from the salad bar and potted them on into a fish box with supports. I’m guessing as I us a bag of dried peas from the supermarket for my shoot, that they will be a soup pea variety? And if I do get any pods form I can just leave them on the plant . Meaning I don’t have to pick every day?

They failed - didn't even have the energy to rot!!

So how many of the old seed varieties have been successful? I’ve lost count 

Lord Leicester is the star performer.
Colossal only managed 2 plants

The others are still asleep!!
At least my conscience is clear and I can scatter any remaining peas willy nilly.
