RE: 2021 plan - mcdood - 30-01-2021

Gardenfocused lists these as slug resistant:

Charlotte, Estima, Golden Wonder, Kestrel, Romano, Sante and Wilja.

I've personally grown both Charlotte and Kestrel both 2nd earlies and they are both great, not grown the others.

Sadly no list on there for vole resistant. Smile

I can vouch for the Kestrel being slug resistant and most earlies are slug resistant to a certain extent because they are in the soil for such a short time. Smile

RE: 2021 plan - Eyren - 02-02-2021

I hope to have all four raised beds up and running this spring, plus lots more container growing on my patio and in the new conservatory Big Grin

Favourite vegetables that I've grown before:

  • CFBs
  • Broad beans
  • Peas (regular, mangetout, sugar snap)
  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Lettuce
  • Cherry tomatoes (several varieties)
  • Beetroot (red, striped, golden)
  • Garlic
  • Spring onions
  • Winter squash
New to me:
  • Malabar spinach - a heat-loving climber which I'm very excited to try
  • More leafy greens - kailaan, broccoli raab, collard greens, chopsuey greens
  • Celeriac
  • Summer squash (patty pan, crookneck)
Fingers crossed as I haven't had much luck in the past:
  • Sweet peppers
  • Chillies
  • Aubergines
  • Pak choi
  • Leeks (a bit tricky in our dry climate)
  • Courgettes (I'm the only person on the planet who's never had a courgette glut!!)
Fruit:
  • Blueberries
  • Strawberries
  • Rhubarb (not much, if any, of that as it's a new crown)
On the ornamental front, I have new perennials that I'm excited to see flower:
  • Roses Alba Maxima (white) and Gabriel Oak (cerise)
  • Honeysuckle "Rhubarb & Custard"
  • Clematis "Nelly Moser"
and a selection of rather dramatic tulips (Black Parrot, etc). Not forgetting the usual annuals such as old-fashioned sweet peas!

There's more, of course, but those are the highlights!

RE: 2021 plan - Mark_Riga - 02-02-2021

I like to be self sufficient in:
peas, potatoes, onions, garlic, drying beans, tomatoes, leeks, pumpkins and squash, chillies, broadbeans (drying)
raspberries, blackcurrants and redcurrants

and grow lots in season of:
parsnips, carrots, courgettes, cauli, sweet peppers, french beans, aubergines, sweetcorn, lettuce, beetroot, cucumber
apples (hopefully August to March) pears, plums

some:
cabbage, broccoli, brussels,

want but often fail:
strawberries and melons.
Too many pest like strawberries: birds, squirrels, mice, slugs... I saw 4 squirrels having a look around at the weekend.
melons can be growing strongly then just up and pop their clogs.
though with the state of the ground at the present not sure what I'll be able to grow, might have to rethink
growing rice.
