Cooking / Using Runners - Broadway - 29-09-2020

Morning Folks

First year growing and I think I should have picked them earlier as they seem a bit tough.

Any suggestions how I can use them?

Have you cooked any?
If you do, make sure you "string" the sides and slice the beans thinly - spaghetti size or smaller.

Or.............leave the beans to dry on the plant and replant the seeds next year.

One reason I stick to CFB , runners are such a faff.

Thanks folks

Just about to UAT(IT term sorry/basically test as you suggested VG) a few to see how they are.

I have already topped / tailed / stringed, if they are too tough is there some sort of bean paste recipe that you folks have used?

I use one of these bean slicers for runners, but, like JJB, I prefer to grow and eat CFBs as they're not so demanding

Hello VG

Got one of those. Just tested them and my decision is I have good leather to resole my shoes!

I have about half left growing so should I leave them so save the seed? Also, can you save runner beans to dry and eat whenever?

RE: Cooking / Using Runners - Mark_Riga - 29-09-2020

Runner beans are fine dried. I grew a variety Czar specifically to dry, supposed to be like butter beans but I wasn't that impressed. They were OK.
If you have a pressure cooker, you can soak in hot water for an hour then cook, probably 20 to 30 minutes. Otherwise it is soaking overnight and then cooking for however long it takes after a rapid boil to start.

I grow Scarlet emperor and use the shelled beans in chilli’s cooking them the same way as Mark does.

RE: Cooking / Using Runners - Broadway - 14-10-2020

Ok harvested the rest of the runners today. I intend to let them dry a little longer then shell and store.

Is there any particular trick to storing the beans once shelled?

Only thing I can think of Danny is to make sure that they're full dry before storing in a cool dry place.
