Yes, you can eat them - but I don't. Smile
Maybe next year!

Spurred on by this thread, I've just collected this year's seed heads - 7 but each one should have 10-20 bulbils. Smile

Veggie, are these big enough to harvest?
I stuck the secateurs in the pot for size reference.

Think they’ll be getting a bigger pot when they die back this year.

RE: Wild/Perennial/Babington leeks - Veggie - 02-05-2022

Probably - I've never harvested one!! Leave the base in the pot to grow on - cut it down to an inch or two above soil level.

Thanks. I’ll harvest one tomorrow.

Are there other beast like this?
We have a wild onion sort of thing that produces heads that grow. It's a bit of a nuisance really because it loves growing through weed matting rather than open ground and is impossible to remove.
Perhaps I've been missing a culinary gem, or at least food for free!

AFAIK all alliums are edible, some better than others.
Babingtons look like elephant garlic but EGs have the cloves at the base, whilst Babs tend to split at the base and multiply that way and with bulbils. They taste similar.

They’re nice. Very mild leek flavour.

Was it tough/stringy?
