Manky Courgettes? - Broadway - 08-07-2020

Hello Folks

A couple of my courgettes are thinner at the tip end and have gone a bit moudy??

RE: Manky Courgettes? - JJB - 08-07-2020

Mine too, it often happens with the early ones. Our colleagues on the forum will be able to say why a lot better than I. Don't worry the next few will be fine.

If they're small and yellow on the end, chuck them - they won't grow

RE: Manky Courgettes? - Broadway - 08-07-2020

Thanks folks, any reason why this happens?

The yellowing ones haven' been fertilised - or the plant has too many courgettes for it to support so it sheds a few. I cut off a few this morning from mine.

Oh ok thanks Veggie, do you leave a standard number per plant?

Danny try tickling each flower with a paintbrush that might help with pollenating.

No, its just gut feeling. Take the biggest one, leave a couple to grow, cut off the puny ones.

Courgettes rotting at the flower end?
I've seen this often but didn't know what caused it................now I do.Smile

Q How do courgette fruits rot?

A The fruits start to develop normally and then, when still quite small, start to discolour and rot at the flower end. The rot then spreads back along the fruit towards the stem. This invariably starts when the petals of the fading flower start to deteriorate and the rot then spreads into the fruit. The petals rot fairly easily and very rapidly during wet weather.

Q What should I do if courgette fruits are rotting?

A Remove any rotting fruit promptly.

Q How can I prevent courgette fruits rotting?

A Always apply water direct to the base of the plants and avoid wetting the flowers, never water from overhead. In wet weather remove the flowers as soon as the fruit has started to form and that way the problem cannot start.
