I've  got to ask Bren, what is a jar of gluttony?

JJB its a Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall recipe here's a link

https://www.rivercottage.net/recipes/glutney

my recipe is from a book and it uses half the quantities.

A couple of questions for you knowledgeable people. Shy

I have made some chutney which is still in the pan and has cooled overnight. This was to make sure it had the right consistency when it was cooled, which it has. Can I put this into sterilised jars ,cold or do I need to heat it up again, which I would rather not do. Huh

Second question is I have loads of jars I have kept and removed the labels, but some still have the sticky old label residue which I can't remove with hot soapy water and scrubbing. Any ideas for cleaning these?

Many thanks in anticipation. Smile

I'm no good for chutney advice, but I have had success with isopropanol/rubbing alcohol for removing sticky label residue.

I have known half eaten jars lying about for a very long time and not deteriorating so I would think it is OK. Depends how many jars you have. I would see no problem with filling a few jars that would be eaten quickly (6 months) and ideally you would be careful to exclude any air as you are filling the jars. 71C is used to pasteurize apple juice so I would probably heat to that any I wanted to give as presents.

It is similar to jam I would think, probably keeps better in fact as has salt and vinegar in. Obviously it is hot into the jars but i just cover surface with greaseproof paper and the lid doesn't make an air tight seal. This keeps a couple of years at least like that.

Just looked in the fridge and there is a half eaten branston pickle that tastes and looks perfectly ok with bbd of Jan 2010. I think I may need to finish it off as don't like food going to waste. I think my son used to have it on sandwiches and he isn't here now.

Thanks to both of you. Cool

I have ordered Sticky Stuff Remover on Veggie's recommendation and will give that a try.

I put my Courgette, tomato, apple and onion chutney  into jars yesterday. Cool I gave my daughter a jar and after tasting it she texted me to ask if I had any more as in her words it was 'lush' Rolleyes
